Introduction:
Giorgetto Giugiaro is arguably the world’s most influential modern automotive designer. During his impressive career, Giugiaro styled cars for nearly every major automaker across the globe. In 1999, a jury of more than 120 journalists from around the world named Giugiaro “Designer of the Century”. Considering the breadth of his accomplishments, it is difficult to name anyone who has had a greater influence on modern automotive design than Giorgetto Giugiaro. In addition to cars, Giugiaro designed camera bodies for Nikon, the organ of the cathedral of Lausanne, and developed a new pasta shape, "Marille". He also designed several watch models for Seiko as well as office furniture for Okamura Corporation. Indeed, his influence lasted for over 30 years.
Jury Citation:
Giorgetto Giugiaro has crafted innumerable classics of industrial design with his extraordinary talent, and his creativity extends far beyond automotive design: from the Volkswagen Golf to the Nikon F3/F4/F5 cameras, to the Marille pasta. With his unique Italian design aesthetics, he seamlessly integrates technology into the fulfillment of human needs, emotions, and the creation of meaning. In the era of proliferating artificial intelligence, the value of aesthetics is particularly crucial.
